About Me

I’m a coffee person. I will actually research the best places to get coffee in a new place I’m visiting. And I know I’m not the only one…

How it all started

The Hidden Coconut was started during my teaching adventure in Thailand as a way to not forget my own language. I know that might sound weird, but after teaching kids three to four-letter words every day, you start to lose your own vocabulary.

Any kindergarten teachers out there may relate.

Since then, I’ve found that I enjoy being able to write about my experiences and travel during my free time. The Hidden Coconut has become a way for me to share what I’ve learned with the rest of the world, and hopefully, it can help you too.

You can expect to find posts about what it’s like to live abroad, ESL teaching tips, and off the beaten path adventures.

I recommend starting with these posts:

Now for a Bit of Back Story

After graduating, I worked in random retail and restaurant jobs while trying to break into the corporate world. But, I had the most difficult time getting hired anywhere. One of those things where if you don’t have the experience you won’t be hired, but I can’t get experience without being hired.

So, after four years at the same restaurant, I decided to take my first overseas solo trip to Europe where I visited Prague, Vienna, Venice, and Rome. This trip started my wanderlust quest.

A year later, I officially hung up my waitress apron and was back in Prague completing a TEFL certificate. I even managed to land some interviews to teach Business English. I was hired by one company but decided against it because the pay was too low to support myself.

While in Prague, I had another opportunity open up to go to Thailand for a teaching internship. Since the dates lined up between the end of Prague and the beginning of Thailand, I decided to go for it.

And now, here I am two years later, teaching English in the suburbs of Bangkok.

Thank you for visiting!
